Coffee Before Workout - How Does Coffee Affect Your Workout?

If you’re anything like us, you need a good brew before you can tackle anything for the day. At some point, you might have wondered if the same coffee that powers you up for the day actually does anything for you during your workout. That’s what we’re going to find out. As you go along and read through this page, you’ll find out some deets about the logic, the reasoning, and maybe even some science behind workout coffees.

Sit back, relax, and grab a cup of your favourite blend and let’s get to it.

Why Do People Think Drinking Coffee Before Workouts Help?

The simple reasoning for this is that if coffee is strong enough to wake you up, it’s strong enough to give you energy for exercise. It is said to be able to enhance your performance and improve your stamina. Some folks also swear by other coffee before workout benefits like its ability to help them recover after their workout session.

The most crucial factor here is likely the caffeine content in your brew. And if you take a step back and look at it at face value, it makes sense. But here’s where we can dive into some science, if any, behind the caffeine found in your pre-workout coffee.

Some Science Behind Your Pre-Workout Coffee

We mentioned it before, and here we find out more about how caffeine plays a role in your workouts. That said, there are certain studies that seem to back up and prove that drinking coffee before workouts could help.

For aerobic exercises or game sports, the ideal time to have your caffeine dose (between 3 and 6 mg.kg−1) is 60 minutes prior. There are some limiting factors to consider, though. If you are a habitual coffee drinker (who isn’t, really), you could unknowingly build up a tolerance for caffeine. So all that coffee before workout benefits is basically flushed down the drain in this case.

To be clear, other things can still affect your workout like when you drink your coffee aside from the amount you drink. The time of day you’re actually exercising, your genetics, and even your gender play a role in their own way.

The degree of exercise also affects the benefits of your coffee before workout. Of course, it does! That coffee before gym sessions is far from the caffeine pro athletes might need to, say, play a strenuous rugby match.

Are There Side Effects To Drinking A Cup Of Coffee Before Workouts?

Anything that involves caffeine has some sort of withdrawal. Even just a small amount can give you some symptoms! The symptoms vary depending on the person. You could get headaches, feel drowsy, feel your energy levels decrease, be irritable, and experience light-headedness.

Since 80 to 90% of adults in North America use caffeine on a daily basis, you bet there are some that take that a little too far. There is such a thing as too much coffee - as much as it pains us to say so. A healthy amount involves up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine. That equates to three or four cups of brewed coffee per day.

And just to share a little fact, those that take their caffeine intake too far tend to experience terrible withdrawal. They could feel it within 12 to 24 hours and continue to do so for more than a week. We don’t ever mean to scare you and keep you from enjoying a good brew, but it’s worth knowing that you can take coffee drinking to the extreme if you’re not careful.

Iced Coffee? Strong Black Coffee Before Workout? Do The Differences Matter?

strong black coffee

We all like our caffeine differently. Some like it iced with a shot of espresso and some like it super strong with 2…maybe even 3! But, yes, the differences matter. Strong coffee = caffeinated coffee. With what we just learned, some people may have built a natural tolerance for coffee and may need something with a kick to really feel the positive effects.

Whether it’s iced or not doesn’t really matter when we’re talking about caffeine. But don’t go expecting a boosted workout with a decaf coffee. It’s decaffeinated coffee and that defeats the whole purpose of a pre-workout coffee!.
